Inpatient Psychiatric Treatment for Mature Adults

Sometimes a person’s mental illness becomes so crippling that he or she may be unable to complete activities of daily living such as caring for themselves and their family, going to work or even following health prescriptions for existing medical conditions. They may also become suicidal, aggressive or dangerous to themselves or others. When this occurs, the person may need to be voluntarily or involuntarily admitted to the hospital, which averages 7-10 days but can be shorter or longer, to be stabilized and receive treatment. This unit also cares for individuals who require assistance with walking or daily activities and those with uncomplicated co-morbid medical issues.

Who this program treats

The Mature Adult Inpatient Psychiatric Program offers a secure and healing environment. Older patients who need to be admitted to the hospital commonly suffer from:

  • Depression
  • Bipolar disorders
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Schizophrenia
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder
  • Substance-related disorders with psychiatric symptoms
  • Non-compliance with their medications

Services this program offers

Patients who are admitted to this program receive an array of services from an experienced team of board-certified psychiatrists, internal medicine doctors, psychiatric nurses, licensed therapists, care coordinators, and behavioral health specialists. Additional services may include physical and occupational therapy and pain management.

Mature patients who are admitted reside in a separate, 20-bed unit. During their stay patients are immersed in an intensive therapeutic program that runs from 9 a.m.–9 p.m. The majority of the day is filled with group therapy sessions where patients discuss their issues, set goals and learn coping skills. Medication management and compliance, as well as illness education and relapse prevention are important components of the inpatient program.

Therapies and services offered through the Mature Adult Inpatient Psychiatric Program include:

  • Group, individual and family therapy
  • Recreation therapy
  • Music therapy
  • Pet therapy
  • Exercise therapy

  • Stress management

Each of our staff members work with each patient in order to support and prepare him or her to move to a less structured environment.
